Somerset’s largest glass supplier, Topline Glass and Glazing, celebrated a technological leap forward with the unveiling of its new AI-powered scanner, the Soft Solution Line Scanner. Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Dyke officially inaugurated the advanced system at the company’s Ilton headquarters, praising its potential to revolutionize small business operations in the county.

The scanner promises to enhance production efficiency by refining automated methods for error detection, a move that positions the company as a leader in adopting cutting-edge solutions. Topline, which employs 28 staff, hopes the innovation will strengthen its competitiveness in the glazing industry.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Dyke said, “This is a fantastic example of the new frontier for small businesses in Somerset, using AI—not to replace people—but to support and streamline current practices.” She emphasized the importance of fostering business growth in the South West amid low confidence among local small business owners.

Jeremy Bartlett, Director of Topline Glass and Glazing, expressed his enthusiasm about the MP’s visit. “It’s really fantastic to have an MP who’s not just interested in business but genuinely wants to understand the needs of the business community,” he said.

For over 40 years, Topline Glass and Glazing has been a one-stop shop for the trade, combining traditional expertise with a commitment to technological advancement. The new AI scanner aligns with the Liberal Democrat manifesto’s pledge to support businesses in adopting digital technologies.

With its reputation for exceptional service and precision, Topline remains at the forefront of the glazing industry, proving that innovation and tradition can thrive side by side.

Why it matters: Artificial intelligence represents the future for so many sectors in the business world. Unfortunately the fenestration sector has been slow to catch-up, with many business owners reluctant to learn how it can help their business. Many questioning how AI can help a manufacturing business. Topline have taken a different approach and embraced AI and have developed a way it can help enhance their business and gain a competitive advantage. They should be commended for their approach, it just shows how AI has far reaching benefits.
