News: Expansion for AGC Glass Europe with acquisition of German safety glass manufacturer

AGC Glass Europe has strengthened its position in the European glass market with the acquisition of Sicherheitsglastechnik Oelsnitz GmbH (SGT), one of the continent’s largest manufacturers of safety glass. The deal also includes Verwaltungsgesellschaft Schuler & Weiß OHG and its subsidiary SG Transport GmbH, further expanding AGC’s operations in Germany.

With a workforce of approximately 270 employees, SGT produces high-quality safety glass for use in facades and interior spaces worldwide. The acquisition enhances AGC’s European network, broadens its value chain, and reinforces its leadership in innovative glass solutions. The Oelsnitz production facility will continue operations seamlessly, ensuring uninterrupted supply to customers.

By integrating SGT into its business, AGC is also consolidating its global presence in the façade projects sector. The move strengthens the capabilities of AGC INTERPANE, allowing the company to deliver complex glass structures and coatings that meet the ambitious designs of architects and developers.

“With the acquisition of our long-standing partner SGT, we are increasing our European market share and reinforcing our global position, sending a strong signal to stakeholders in building projects,” said Dany D’Hont, AGC’s Vice President Downstream, Architectural Glass Europe and Americas.

Sebastian Schmidt, a member of the executive board at AGC INTERPANE, praised the collaboration between the two companies, thanking SGT founders Wolfgang Weiß and Joachim Schuler. “They have built a company that stands for quality, innovation, and reliability—values that AGC fully shares,” he said.

The acquisition marks a strategic expansion for AGC Glass Europe as it looks to consolidate its market dominance and meet rising global demand for advanced architectural glass solutions.

Why this matters: This is another move by AGC to increase its share of the European market and build on its global presence. Innovation is also key in this move as it allows AGC access to the knowledge and expertise of SGT in the safety glass arena.
