Energy: Forward thinking manufacturers look to alternative energy sources

UK manufacturers in the glazing sector have been subjected to huge surges in their energy bills. Like many other manufacturing sectors, production is reliant on the use of machinery that uses high levels of energy. Despite the energy caps now being introduced in the commercial sector, forward thinking manufacturers across Europe are investigating alternative power supplies. In Germany, PVC-U extrusion company Profine has invested in an energy provider to secure its own supply of power. In the UK A&B Group, a manufacturer of windows and doors, has installed over 700 solar panels to help power its manufacturing site in Sudbury, Suffolk

Why it matters: Many experts believe energy prices will not return to rates we witnessed 12 months ago. Despite escalating raw material prices and energy costs, prices of finished goods to consumers are not rising at the same rate. With higher cost of living, consumers are reluctant to pay more for home improvements. It is a vicious circle that businesses need to tackle. Using solar energy to power production plants is one measure that could help tackle the challenge of rising energy cost, while also increasing a firms commitment to sustainability.
