NEWS: Quebec window factory embraces future, speeds production

Fenergic, a Quebec-based window and door manufacturer, has revolutionized its production with new technology, tripling its manufacturing speed and significantly increasing its capacity for tempered and triple-glazed windows. This transformation, spurred by a visit to the glasstec exhibition in 2022, addresses the growing market demand for energy-efficient and sound-insulating windows in multi-family homes, high-rise buildings, and multiplexes.

Founded in 1953, Fenergic has long been a key player in the Canadian window and door industry. Faced with Quebec’s harsh winters and new construction regulations promoting triple glazing, the company recognized the need to upgrade its production methods. Prior to this shift, approximately 50% of their glass was produced by hand, leading to inconsistencies and slower output.

Véronique Bouladier, Fenergic’s Public Relations & Marketing Coordinator, highlighted the pivotal moment during their visit to Glasstec 2022. While initially seeking other solutions, they discovered the Glaston TPS® Insulated Glass (IG) line. Despite past negative experiences with similar thermoplastic gasket (TPG) systems, Glaston’s assurance that “This is not your grandfather’s TPS” convinced Fenergic of the new technology’s advancements.

Following the exhibition, Fenergic conducted thorough due diligence, aligning with business partners and banks to confirm the return on investment. Six months after glasstec, they made the decision to acquire both the TPS® IG line from Glaston Germany and the RC Series tempering line from Glaston Finland. Fortunately, Fenergic had sufficient land to construct a new facility to house the state-of-the-art equipment.

In the fall of 2023, Fenergic sent a team of operators to Germany for a test run of their new IG line. This hands-on experience proved invaluable, allowing the team to familiarize themselves with the equipment and conduct various tests, from simple operations to worst-case scenarios.

The installation of the IG line was followed by comprehensive operator training. The ease of operation was a pleasant surprise, leading to the line being fully operational six months ahead of schedule. This new technology has not only significantly reduced the physical strain on workers but also enabled the same five-person team to manage the entire operation, effectively tripling their output.

“We have really good people who have been with us for decades… But the new technology allows us to triple our speed with the same staff,” notes Véronique. The operators’ enthusiasm for the new system is evident, with reports of them having more free time for other projects and eagerly awaiting new orders.

Why it matters:  Fenergic’s strategic investment has dramatically shifted its production capabilities. The company, which previously supplied about 10% tempered glass and 10% triple glazing, is now aiming for 60% tempered glass and 50–60% triple glazing, with a goal of reaching over 80% triple-glazed products. This allows Fenergic to handle all its production in-house, ensuring quality control and responsiveness to market demands. Véronique Bouladier is optimistic about the future, actively planning customer and media visits to showcase their transformed operations.
